The festival’s closing concert will be conducted by British-American pianist and conductor Ian Hobson, who has served as guest conductor of Sinfonia Varsovia since 2023. Though he has so far remained somewhat in the background of Sinfonia Varsovia’s concert activity, he has played a key role in the orchestra’s prolific recording work. Hobson’s relationship with the orchestra spans more than two decades of recording repertoire discoveries – often world premieres – including recent releases of orchestral music by Richard Stöhr and Moritz Moszkowski. This year marks the centenary of the death of this Polish-Jewish pianist and composer, born in the then-German Breslau (now Wrocław). Now somewhat forgotten, Moszkowski was, in his lifetime, a celebrated pianist (held in great esteem by Ignacy Jan Paderewski), conductor, composer, and even teacher, whose influence extended to such figures as Józef Hofmann, Wanda Landowska, Thomas Beecham and Joaquín Turina. Alongside a selection of lighter orchestral pieces, Sinfonia Varsovia will perform his Orchestral Suite No. 3, Op. 79. The second half of the concert will feature American works with distinctly jazz-inflected roots: Gershwin’s famous Rhapsody in Blue will be paired with Don Gillis’s playful Symphony No. 5½.
