A triple-CD anthology of Polish contemporary music from 1939-1945 has just been released. This is the first publication of its kind.

Some excerpts from the booklet accompanying the Anthology:

“Some time ago, while working on our repertoire and concert calendar, we came to the conclusion that the upcoming year 2014 is full of important historical and musical anniversaries: the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, the 71st anniversary of the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto, the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising and the 100th birthday anniversary of Andrzej Panufnik. All of these are important and, in the past, they have not been without influence upon the fates of our families and of ourselves – as Poles and as musicians.

Of this emotional need was born a project which ultimately took on the form of a triple album – a sui generismusical panorama of the time of war, the ghetto, the Warsaw Uprising and of Poland’s complicated fate brought about by that war.
This subjective anthology came into existence thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the City of Warsaw. It restores to the present oft little-known works of a generation of composers so terribly experienced by history.
Let us hope we are not the only ones who believe its importance.”

Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra

“A triple album of Polish music associated with World War II is the first anthology of its kind in Poland. The core of the material on these CDs consists of five works composed in Poland under the German occupation, while two were written by Polish composers abroad, also during the war. The programme opens with works written by young, promising composers from a period immediately preceding the outbreak of the war which disrupted the development of their international careers, and closes with works written after the war by composers affected by the trauma of the apocalypse that transpired in occupied Poland. They refer more or less obviously to the events of that tragic age era.”
dr Katarzyna Naliwajek - Mazurek

The album contains, among others, Andrzej Panufnik’s “Tragic Overture”, Ludomir Różycki’s “Pietà. On Smouldering Ruins of Warsaw”, Grażyna Bacewicz’s “Overture for Symphony Orchestra”, Aleksander Tansman’s “Polish Rhapsody”, Karol Rathaus’ “Music for Strings”, Tadeusz Zygfryd Kassern’s “Concerto for String Orchestra” and Stefan Kisielewski’s “Concerto for Chamber Orchestra”.

All the works are performed by Sinfonia Varsovia under the direction of renowned conductors: Jerzy Maksymiuk, Jacek Kaspszyk and Renato Rivolta, with soloists of the young generation: Marcel Markowski (cello) and Maciej Grzybowski (piano).

The Anthology of Polish Contemporary Music is a non-commercial release. It will be distributed to Polish music and media collections, music schools, institutes managed by the Ministry of Culture and to Polish Institutes abroad.

The album includes a booklet in Polish and English.
