Lorin Maazel – famous American conductor, composer and violinist passed away at the age of 84 on 13 July.

Sinfonia Varsovia had the honour of performing under the direction of Maestro Lorin Maazel in November last year during the festival organised on the occasion of Krzysztof Penderecki’s 80th birthday. On 18 November 2013, the musicians performed Penderecki’s 4th Symphony in the National Philharmonic Concert Hall in Warsaw:

“(…) There was greater interest in the performance (…) of legendary American conductor Lorin Maazel. With the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra they performed the 4th Symphony with such precision that it became exceptionally transparent for the listener. This does not happen too often in contemporary music.”

Jacek Marczyński, Rzeczpospolita, No. 227 (25.11.2013)

The passing of Lorin Maazel, long-term conductor of such orchestras as the New York Philharmonic is an enormous loss to the classical music world.
