Jan Duszyński

Jan Duszyński

Jan Antoni Duszyński composes autonomous music, and also music for theatre and films. He graduated from the Department of Composition at the Warsaw University of Music in the class of Professor Stanisław Moryto and with honours from the Juilliard School of Music in New York in the class of Professor Christopher Rouse.

Duszyński has received a scholarship from the Kościuszko Foundation, the Witold Lutosławski Scholarship, the Marvin Hamilsh scholarship and the Gretchaninoff Memorial Prize. He took part in composition master classes in Aspen, Colorado, led, among others by Steve Mackie and John Corigliano. He is a laureate of composition competitions, winning prizes for, among others, the work Odległe miejsce (A Distant Place) for baritone and string quartet at the Adam Didur competition, for best music for the play Seksualne Życie Dzikich [Sexual Life of Savages] at the Divine Comedy Festival in Cracow and for the play Nieskończona Historia [Unfinished Story] in a competition for the production of a contemporary Polish play. The same quasi-operatic work was selected as the best in music for theatre plays by the Polish monthly periodical “Teatr”. The composers music to the film Jack Strong was nominated for the Golden Eagle award. In 2017 the Z. Raszewski Theatre Institute awarded Duszyński the prize for best music for the play Robert Robur, staged by TR in Warsaw.

In the summer of 2018 the composer was invited by the cult Wooster Group theatre in New York to take over the post of composer in residence, where he composed music for three plays.

Jan Duszyński’s output includes a significant number of soundtracks to plays and films. He works together with many directors, including Krzysztof Warlikowski (Francuzi), Władysław Pasikowski (Pokłosie, Jack Strong), Agnieszka Glińska (Iwona księżniczka Burgunda, Wiśniowy Sad), Piotr Cieplak (Królowa Śniegu, Nieskończona Historia), Krzysztof Garbaczewski (Burza, Makbet, Seksualne Życie Dzikich) and Michał Zadara (Wszyscy byli odwróceni, Szalona lokomotywa, Biblia). Together with Barbara Wysocka he has produced the enthusiastically received Wozzeck/Woyzeck project for the Kammerspiele Theatre in Munich. The première performance of the composer’s opera Job was commissioned by the Bayerische Staatsoper and also took place in Munich. In recent years the composer has worked on commissions from such ensembles as the Witold Lutosławski String Quartet, Kwartludium, Duo Twogether, the AUKSO Orchestra, the Transemble Quintet, the National Music Forum Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Podlaska Philharmonic and Sinfonia Varsovia. The first performance of Duszyński’s Symphony No. 1 took place in 2017 in Wrocław.
