A gala birthday concert, a concert tour of Lithuania and the last concert in the spring edition of the Sinfonia Varsovia Chamber Music Series are the main items on the Orchestra’s calendar this month, while our youngest listeners are invited to spend two weekends with Smykofonia [The Toddler Philharmonic] – special concerts for children and babies.

April is a special month for the Sinfonia Varsovia Orchestra. It is in April, 34 years ago, that the famous Yehudi Menuhin came to Poland to play with the Orchestra. The Polish Chamber Orchestra that was to accompany the violinist was enlarged for this occasion and the newly-formed ensemble adopted the name of Sinfonia Varsovia. Celebrating another anniversary of this extraordinary encounter, we would like to invite you to a Birthday Concert which will take place on 15 April at 6:00 p.m. in Teatr Wielki – the National Opera. The special guest will be excellent South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim, who will perform Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major Op. 35. Conducted by Grzegorz Nowak, the Orchestra will also perform the Feliks Nowowiejski’s Overture to the opera Legenda Bałtyku” [Legend of the Baltic] and Symphony No. 4 Adagio”, composed by Krzysztof Penderecki, artistic director of Sinfonia Varsovia. Tickets to the concert are available on

Before the full forces of Sinfonia Varsovia walk onto the stage of Teatr Wielki – the National Opera, we will have another opportunity to meet the Orchestra’s musicians in a chamber setting. The fourth concert of the Sinfonia Varsovia Chamber Music Series will feature a string quartet consisting of Sinfonia Varsovia’s Stanisław Podemski and Agnieszka Guz (violins) and viola player Małgorzata Szczepańska joined by cellist Zofia Ziemkiewicz, participant of the Sinfonia Varsovia Academy programme. The ensemble will play two string quartets, both composed in 1945. Mieczysław Weinberg’s String Quartet No. 5 Op. 27 and Szymon Laks’ String Quartet No. 3 were not only composed in the same year. Both bear witness to the events which had such a forceful impact on the contemporary world. The concert will take place on 4 April at 7:00 p.m. in the Orchestra’s rehearsal hall at 272 Grochowska Street. Admission to the concert is free.

Sinfonia Varsovia’s second concert tour abroad this year is part of the celebration of Poland’s 100th anniversary of regaining its independence and has been financed partly from the funds of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. Concerts in Vilnius and Klaipėda will feature the Orchestra accompanying two young, exceptionally talented artists. The soloist in Henryk Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in D minor Op. 22 will be Lithuanian violinist Dalia Kuznecovaitė, who has already garnered numerous awards and accolades, while the conductor will be 25 year-old Dawid Runtz. Only two years from graduation, the conductor has already won a number of prestigious awards, both as conductor and as composer. As of December of last year Dawid Runtz is the first conductor of the Polish Royal Opera. During the Orchestra’s concerts in Lithuania on 20 & 21 April, Runtz will conduct Grażyna Bacewicz’s Concerto for String Orchestra and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major Op. 92.

Smykofonia’s April concerts will be filled with music announcing the warm season just about to come. On 14 and 15 April the theme will be “A Spring Walk” and the next weekend, on 21 and 22 April, we will travel to sunny Spain. “Seguidilla” is a traditional Spanish dance performed to the accompaniment of a guitar and castanets.
