Sinfonia Varsovia will perform under the direction of Jerzy Maksymiuk on 25 May 2016 in the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. This will be one of several concerts organised this year on the occasion of the 100th birthday anniversary of Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999) – the Orchestra’s first guest conductor, whose musical history intertwines beautifully with the musicians, and with Jerzy Maksymiuk. The soloist will be the Orchestra’s concertmaster, Jakub Haufa.

This will be an extraordinary event, not least because of a rare connection between the works and the musicians. The ensemble will play Jean Marie Leclair’s Concerto for violin, strings and basso continuo in A minor – a work performed many times by Maestro Maksymiuk and the Polish Chamber Orchestra, from which Sinfonia Varsovia was later established. There is also a connection with Menuhin, who, many years ago, gave Jerzy Maksymiuk his own copy of the score. This score will be on the conductor’s podium at the concert in the Museum.

Next in the programme is Andrzej Panufnik’s Violin Concerto, played by Jakub Haufa. The work was written especially for Yehudi Menuhin in 1971 and performed for the first time by the legendary violinist at the City of London Music Festival. At the time, the soloist was accompanied by the Menuhin Festival Orchestra, in which many of Sinfonia Varsovia’s musicians then played.

To conclude, a showpiece performed many times by Sinfonia Varsovia under Menuhin’s direction – Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for String Orchestra in C major.
